Super Neighborhood Meeting: The Alief Super Neighborhood monthly meeting is on November 26 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm.

Westside PIP Meeting: HPD Westside Police Divisional PIP (Positive Interaction Program) - Community Involvement in Crime Prevention. The next meetings is on November 21 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm. The Westside PIP meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month except July, August and December. For more information, call 832-394-5600.

Kashmere Gardens

Kashmere Gardens Neighborhood Support Team Second Meeting

The second Kashmere Gardens Neighborhood Support Team (NST) meeting was held at Kashmere High School at noon on Tuesday, October 15. Students from the National Honor Society were in attendance, along with Principal Reginald Bush. Food was provided at the meeting thanks to HISD Trustee, Rhonda Skillern-Jones. Participants reviewed the activity results from the Complete Communities Kick-Off meeting in Kashmere Gardens that was held last month.

The attendees discussed the purpose of the second public meeting, and how the youth could participate through this community-driven process. Moreover, they confirmed the date for a workshop focusing on flooding, which will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 6 p.m. at the Kashmere Multi-Service Center, 4802 Lockwood Drive, 77026.

The NST is composed of community leaders in Kashmere Gardens and surrounding areas that provides guidance to the public engagement process. If you would like to join the organization or know of leaders that should be included in this dialogue, please contact the planner for Kashmere Gardens. Also, join the NST at the upcoming public meeting on Tuesday, November 12 at 6 p.m. at the Kashmere Multi-Service Center.

Letters & Lives

A writing workshop series called Letters & Lives kicked off on on Sunday, October 27 from 3 - 5 p.m. at Mystic Lyon, 5017 Lyons Avenue, 77020, in Fifth Ward. The series primarily focuses on the experiences of current and past residents of Kashmere Gardens, Trinity/Houston Gardens, and Fifth Ward. These workshops are sponsored by a Houston-based arts organization called DiverseWorks and led by local artist, Willow Curry. Ms. Curry is a writer, multidisciplinary artist, and a Houstonian who grew up and lived in Kashmere Gardens.

Through these workshops, she encourages residents to share and reflect on their memories and experiences of these communities. The series is free, open to any age group, and will take place on Sundays from 3 - 5 p.m. at the same location from October 27, 2019 to January 19, 2020. There are no workshops on December 22, 29, and January 5. More information about the workshop series can be found on the DiverseWorks website and the Facebook event page.

Magnolia Park - Manchester

Complete Communities Kick-Off: Mayor Sylvester Turner spoke to a crowd at the kick-off meeting on November 7. Residents had an opportunity to ask questions and participated in  breakout sessions to discuss things they loved about the neighborhood and areas of concern, including  a mapping activity. Hartman Park Improvements: Valero Energy Foundation is committing more than $600,000 in grants as part of the City’s 50/50 Park Partners initiative for improvements to Hartman Park in the Manchester neighborhood. Funding will go towards the replacement of playground equipment and the planting of additional trees.

Near Northside

Grand Opening of the Residences at Hardy Yards Apartment Homes

Grand Opening of the Residences at Hardy Yards Apartment Homes A ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of Hardy Yards Apartment Homes was held on September 27. The Hardy Yards Apartment Homes is a new, transit-oriented mixed-income development that consists of 350 units, with 179 units rented at affordable rates to residents making under 80 percent of Area Median Income. During the ceremony, remarks were made by Mayor Sylvester Turner, Housing and Community Development Director Tom McCasland, and Lee Zieben, Director of real estate development company called the Zieben Group, as pictured above.

Butterfly Pocket Park in Near Northside

On Wednesday, October 9, City Council approved an ordinance authorizing the Fulton Butterfly Pocket Park development, construction, and maintenance between the City of Houston and the Greater Northside Management District (GNMD). Other partners of the project include the Houston Arts Alliance, the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and Avenue CDC.

The city-owned property, located at the northeast corner of Panama and Fulton Streets, was a key focus of a series of community design workshops in 2016 by Open Architecture Houston in partnership with Avenue CDC, GNMD, and a local artist named Rose Toro. This project is also a recipient of a $75,000-grant from the Visit My Neighborhood pilot grant program by the Houston Arts Alliance and the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. The park serves as an opportunity to transform empty lots into active spaces to enhance community safety.

Second Ward

Hispanic Arts and Cultural Programming: MECA will lead Hispanic Arts and Cultural programming in Second Ward Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA) will serve the Second Ward community by continuing cultural programming at the City-owned facility next to Guadalupe Plaza Park with the assistance of an $80,000 grant from the City.

Attend Public Meeting #2 – December 7 at 10 am - Goals & Projects

Sunnyside Kick-Off on October 30 was a Huge Success

Sunnyside held its first Complete Communities public meeting on Wednesday, October 30. The kick-off meeting celebrated Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Complete Communities initiative in the Sunnyside area. Approximately 100 residents, pastors of faith-based institutions, non-profits and stakeholders attended.

Ms. Sandra Massie Hines welcomed the attendees and introduced the Mayor. Various City of Houston departments and agencies were present to provide information to the community. The purpose of the meeting was to create a vision and goals for the community. Participants defined what is a complete community, what assets are in the community, what are the strengths of the community and what are the challenges.
